On August 1, 1956 Melvin Levander purchased the Herse Funeral Home and Furniture Store and renamed the business Albion Furniture Co. and the Hearse-Levander Funeral Home. In 1960 a major remodeling project was done to the funeral home, doubling its size to include a chapel, private family room, an enlarged selection room, and a four car garage. Melvin then purchased the Meyers Home for Funerals in Albion and merged it with the Levander Funeral Home at its present location of 3rd and Marengo Streets. Included in the purchase was the Meyers Home for Funerals in Cedar Rapids, NE. The name was changed to Levander-Meyer Funeral Home. The same year Chuck Meyer moved, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Cook worked for the Meyers and have lived in the funeral homes and worked for Levander since 1960. In 1967, the Dr. Reeder home (originally the Hadley Home) was purchased from Mrs. Reeder and the Funeral Home was moved to its present location at 304 W. Dayton St. In the spring of 1977 Ron Levander graduated from the University of Minnesota, College of Mortuary Science. He and his wife Mary moved back to Albion to serve his apprenticeship and work at the funeral home. In 1980 the Levander Funeral Home was incorporated, and Ron was appointed the manager.
