Thomas W. Batenhorst, 84 of Cedar Rapids, NE, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at his home in Cedar Rapids, NE.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE with Fr. Mark Tomasiewicz and Fr. Robert Matya officiating.  Burial will be at the parish cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Dan Cox American Legion Post #44 of Cedar Rapids, NE, Army Funeral Honor Guard, and American Legion Riders. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the church, with a 7 p.m. Wake Service at church.

Levander Funeral Home of Cedar Rapids, NE is in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas William Batenhorst, son of Frank and Theresa (Halbur) Batenhorst was born on October 1, 1935 at Cedar Rapids, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE. Tom attended school at St. Anthony's Catholic School and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1953. He entered the United States Army on September 3, 1958 and served after the Korean Conflict. Tom was honorably discharged on June 14, 1960. He then worked as a pumper for Batenhorst Gravel in Cedar Rapids, NE.

On May 17, 1974 Tom was united in marriage to Eileen K. Matya at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The couple lived on a farm near Cedar Rapids, then eventually moved into town. Tom worked for Gerhold Concrete Company, Columbus, NE as a pumper until 1997 when he retired.

T om was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, NE and for years counted the collections after church. He was an avid Husker Football Fan, as well as a sports fan in general. Tom also loved to hunt and fish. He also produced and then canned a large garden. Tom was very independent and enjoyed keeping up his property and house.

Tom is survived by his sister Mary (Frank) Ballweg of Spalding, NE, along with many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eileen; three sisters Eileen (George) Schmitz, Madelaine Germar, Jean (Richard) Mahoney; brother-in-law Dan (Angela) Matya; niece Margaret Bach, and nephew Bill Germar.
