Shirley Evelyn Choat, daughter of William Paul and Evelyn (Stiner) Timm was born June 9, 1939, in Osceola, NE. Shirley was baptized and raised in the Methodist faith. She graduated from Lincoln High and later attended Nebraska Wesleyan University.

On November 22, 1959, Shirley was united in marriage to Gary L. Choat in Lincoln, NE. From this union, Shirley was blessed with two children. The couple made their home north of Boone, NE, until 1975 when they moved one mile west of St. Edward.

Shirley was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and later Faith Lutheran Church. She was strong in her faith. As a young girl, she loved to roller-skate, and later in life, she belonged to several bowling leagues, loved going to dances with Gary and their friends, enjoyed Friends of Music and her neighborhood Kitchen Klatter Club. Shirley was passionate about helping others, which led her to volunteer at the Boone County Health Center, Cloverlodge Care Center, and The Mission Possible Store. She spent many hours with her sewing machine, making things 'new again' with her talent of sewing and patchwork. She was an avid sports fan, especially Nebraska Husker football and volleyball, as well as the Royal's baseball team.
