Richard (Dick) "Mac" C. Mahoney, 93, of Albion, NE, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society, Albion, NE.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion, NE with Fr. Mark Tomasiewicz officiating. Burial will be at the parish cemetery with Military Services conducted by American Legion Post #162 and VFW Post #736 of Albion, NE, Army Funeral Honor Guard, and the American Legion Riders. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the church, with a 7 p.m. Wake Service.
Levander Funeral Home of Albion, NE is in charge of the arrangements.
Richard (Dick) "Mac" C. Mahoney, son of John Edward and Olga Elva (McClure) Mahoney was born on December 12, 1925 at Cedar Rapids, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE. He attended elementary school at country school in the Timbercreek area and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1943. Following high school Dick worked as a lineman for Northwestern Telephone Company in Sidney, NE.
On September 13, 1950 Dick entered the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. He was honorable discharged on August 19, 1952. This is when the nickname "Mac" started. In his late years he preferred Mac as his name.
Dick was united in marriage to Jean Claire Batenhorst at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE. They lived and farmed near Cedar Rapids until 1966 when they moved to Albion, NE. Dick worked there selling insurance and feed. Jean passed away in 1995. Dick was involved in many things and kept busy. He volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels, as well as passing snacks and juice at the hospital, and served on the Albion Senior Center Board. He loved to build, woodworking, and working on his Farmall Tractor. Dick enjoyed working in his pasture, and would repair a certain portion of his fence every year. He was an avid reader, and some of his favorite people were Pope John Paul II and the Kennedy's.
While living in Cedar Rapids, Dick was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. When they moved to Albion they became member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church. Dick was a 4 th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of American Legion Post #162 of Albion, NE.
Dick is survived by his seven children: Janet (Ron) Clark of Casper, WY; Kathleen Mahoney of Omaha, NE; Mary Jo (Steve) Sempek of Papillion, NE; Deborah Borer of Cedar Rapids, NE; Pamela (Dale) Boro of Seward, NE; Sheryl (Bradd) Bergland of Colorado Springs, CO; Douglas (Kim) Mahoney of Medford, WI; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sister Marilyn Nealon of Flower Mound, TX; sisters-in-law: Katie Mahoney of Cedar Rapids, NE; Mary (Frank) Ballweg of Spalding, NE; brother-in-law: Tom Batenhorst of Cedar Rapids, NE, along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers: Jun (Meta), Robert, Gene (Caryl), and Jim Mahoney, sister Irene Mahoney, sisters-in-law: Eileen Batenhorst, Eileen (George) Schmitz, Madelaine Gemar and brother-in-law: Jack Nealon.
