On November 7, 1956, Mel was inducted into the U.S. Army. He faithfully served his country for two years and was honorably discharged on August 6, 1958.
On June 1, 1957, Mel married the love of his life, Margaret Kahlandt, at the Lutheran Church in Valley, Nebraska. Together, they were blessed with three daughters: Janice, Tammy, and Diane.
Mel devoted his life to farming and ranching, enjoying every part of working the land. He also had side businesses of moving trees and moving hay. Beyond his work, Mel was a man of faith and community. He was an active member of the Methodist Church in Loretto, participated in the United Methodist Men's Club, and helped start the "100 Club."
In his free time, Mel enjoyed hunting including pheasants, deer, elk, and bear, fishing, traveling, and playing card games such as Pitch. One of his proudest moments was when he shot a royal elk.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years: Margaret Andrews of Albion, NE; three daughters: Janice (Randy) Spiegel of Elkhorn, NE; Tammy (Denny) Lough of Albion, NE; and Diane (Danny) Cox of Albion, NE; seven grandchildren: Brooke (Justin) Harrie of Elkhorn, NE; Lindsey (Greg) White of Blair, NE; David (Ann) Lough of Lincoln, NE; Tanya (Derek) Cave of Lincoln, NE; Dana (Sarah) Cox of Albion, NE; Amy (Tom) Lueken of Albion, NE; and Margo (Jerry) Klassen of Lindsay, NE; 17 great-grandchildren: Kaden, Nolan, Adalyn, Joslyn, Aeson, Olivia, Jake, Mya, Aubrey, Brody, Tristan, Braxton, Kaylee, Cruz, Colby, Josie, and JJ; sister: Ellen (Lee) Howell of Albion, NE; sister-in-law: Joan Kahlandt of Elkhorn, NE; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his granddaughter: Nicole Spiegel-Wheeler.
Mel will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion to family will live on through all who loved him. His greatest hope was that his grandchildren would one day say, "I want to be like Grandpa Mel."
