Lorraine Mary Gilroy

Lorraine M. Gilroy, 97, of Ottumwa, IA, originally from the Spalding, NE area, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa, IA.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding, NE with Deacon Paul Nordhues officiating. Interment will follow at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Lorraine Mary Gilroy, affectionally known as "Boog" to her family, was born to Edward and Mary Jane (Hilliard) Gilroy, on March 18, 1925, in Spalding, NE.

While in elementary school, Lorraine moved to Greeley to live with her sister, Gert Gannon and Gert's husband, Joe. She graduated from Greeley Sacred Heart High School in 1943. She was president of her class and enjoyed playing first base on the softball team.

Following graduation, Lorraine attended St. Catharine College, in Springfield, KY. In 1958 she received her bachelor's degree from Iowa State College in Ames, IA. She dedicated the many years of her professional career as a hospital laboratory technician.

Lorraine and her companion, Gwen Hall, lived on a farm on the edge of Ottumwa, Iowa. Their shared love for animals gave them great joy in raise horses, cattle and Lorraine's favorite, Boston terriers. They loved to travel with friends and attend local auctions.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; companion of 70 years: Gwendolyn Joyce Hall; brothers: Alvin, Paul, Bernard, Martin, Ambrose, and Donald Gilroy; and sister: Gertrude Gannon. Lorraine is survived by her many nieces and nephews.
