Leo D. Mahoney, 88, of St. Edward, NE passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward, NE.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at the St. Edward Catholic Church, St. Edward, NE with Fr. Mark Tomasiewicz and Deacon Harlan Long officiating. Burial will be at St. Edward Catholic Cemetery, St. Edward, NE with Military Rites conducted by Crosier American Legion Post #226 of St. Edward, NE, Army Funeral Honor Guard, and the American Legion Riders. Visitation will be 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Monday at the church with a 5:00 p.m. wake service.
Miller-Levander Funeral Home of St. Edward, NE is in charge of the arrangements.
Leo Donald Mahoney, son of James and Vesta (Jackson) Mahoney, was born July 4, 1935, in Nance County. Leo attended St. Edward High School.
On September 17, 1955, Leo was united in marriage to Joan Werts at St. Edward Catholic Church. From this union, Leo was blessed with four wonderful children. The couple lived in Fayetteville, NC at Fort Bragg while Leo was stationed in the Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne.
Following his discharge from the Army, the couple moved to Omaha, NE, where Leo worked as a station attendant at Grabow's Phillips 66 for 10 years before moving back to St. Edward.
From 1965 - 1992, Leo worked at Mahoney Sales and Service and had ownership in the company beginning in 1978. After selling the business in 1992, Leo then worked for an implement dealer in Columbus and delivered equipment for GT Sales and Service.
Leo was a member of the St. Edward Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree Knight, and the Crosier American Legion Post. Leo enjoyed playing cards with friends, helping others, and spending time with his family. He was very proud of his grandchildrens' accomplishments and loved going to their events to show support.
Leo is survived by his loving wife, Joan Mahoney, of St. Edward, NE; three children: Don (Carol) Mahoney of Norfolk, NE; Karen (Terry) Penne of Belgrade, NE; and Kay (Jeff) Hellbusch of St. Edward, NE; eight grandchildren: Kris Schoenauer of Omaha, NE; Kyle Koerting of Norfolk, NE; Eric (Jill) Penne of Cedar Rapids, IA; Kara (Luke) Choyeski of Kearney, NE; Kaylee (Tanner) Focken, of Gothenburg, NE; Tyler (Gabby) Hellbusch of Fullerton, NE; Karli (Austin) Calkins of Norfolk, NE; Kenna Hellbusch of Norfolk, NE; 13 great-grandchildren: Emma, Jake, Elise, Adilyn, Chris, Max, Kinlee, Karsyn, Rhett, Charlotte, Eleanora, Winsley, and Rutger.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Dan Mahoney; brothers Raymond (Norma) Mahoney; Arnold (Iola) Mahoney; Robert (Margaret) Mahoney; John (Margaret) Mahoney; Gene (Rose) Mahoney; Ronald (Jill) Mahoney; sisters Mary Anne (Harold) Baustert; and Fern (George) Werner.
