Lawrence V. Berger

Lawrence V. Berger, 96, formerly of Spalding, NE, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Albion, NE.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2019 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding, NE with Fr. Antony Thekkekara and Fr. Jim Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the church with a 7:00 p.m. wake service.

Dolce-Scheef Mortuary of Spalding, NE is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Vincent Berger, son of Vincent and Anna (Herkert) Berger, was born February 13, 1923 on the family farm west of Spalding, NE. He attended elementary school and graduated from Spalding Academy in 1940. Following graduation, he remained on the farm to assist his father with the farm work.

Lawrence married Catherine "Kitty" Birkby on January 16, 1950 at Church of the Visitation at O'Connor, NE. The couple continued farming and raised their five children: Patricia, Jeanne, Robert, Ann and Rita. Lawrence had a lifelong interest in farming, continuing to help on the farm into his 90's, until his health would no longer allow him to do so.

Lawrence was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church where he served on the finance board, and also served as Treasurer of School Districts 38 and 55 for several years. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children: Patricia (John) Kelley of Falmouth, MA; Jeanne (Jeff) Carr of St. Augustine, FL; Robert (Noreen) Berger of Spalding, NE; Ann (Bob) Prokopec of Clarkson, NE; Rita (Roger) Olsen of Aurora, NE; 11 grandchildren: Karin (Mark) Sloan of Hingham, MA; Michael (Rachel) Kelley of Easton, MA; Kristin Kelley of Mansfield, MA; Cheryl (James) Atchison of Richmond, VA; Erin (Derek) Kozub of Solon, OH; Julie (Ryan) VanRoy of Gretna, NE; Michelle (Stephen) Hoff of Aurora, NE; Jill (Cody) Roberts of Greeley, CO; Tim (Jenna) Prokopec of Clarkson, NE; Kevin Prokopec of Clarkson, NE; Daniel (Taylor) Olsen of Phillips, NE; 20 great-grandchildren; sister: Caroline Glaser of Spalding, NE; sister-in-law: Theresa Berger of Spalding; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Kitty Berger; sister: Mary Berger; brother and sister-in-law: Lewis (Margaret) Berger; brother: Francis Berger; and brother-in-law: Francis Glaser.
