John Charles Scheef was born February 23, 1946 to Robbie H. and Magdeline R. (Peggie) Witkowski Scheef in Omaha and was baptized on April 27, 1947 at Our Lady of Lourdes in Omaha. He was the oldest of three boys. The Scheef family lived in Gretna until 1952 when they moved to a farm 8 miles south of Spalding. John attended District 16 Leo Valley Country School from Kindergarten through the 8 th grade and graduated from Spalding Academy in 1964. He then attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Following college John worked in the construction industry in Lincoln.
On May 12, 1973, John was united in marriage to Regina Bernt at St. Michael's Catholic Church. The couple and their two oldest daughters lived in Lincoln until 1975 when they moved to Spalding. From an early age John learned the value of hard work and he carried that throughout his life. John thoroughly enjoyed his custom farming and over the years also worked for the Village of Spalding, worked for Country Partners Cooperative, and transported kids to Spalding Academy for school. For many years John dug graves in Spalding as he felt that was a way for him to pay tribute to the people who have passed away. In his younger years, John was a member of 4-H and Saddle Club. He was a member of the St. Michael's Men's Club and a retired member of the Spalding Volunteer Fire Department. Along with farming, John enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Above all, John loved spending time with his family and work buddies. John will be remembered for his stubbornness, hard work and love for his family.
John is survived by his wife Regina of Spalding, NE; five children: Denise (Kevin) Keeshan of Lincoln, NE; Kristin (Jason) Sparr of Denton, NE; Shannon (Philip) Landauer of Sioux Rapids, IA; Robbie (Briana) Scheef of Lincoln, NE; Danielle (Scott) Johnson of Pierce, NE; grandchildren: Austin Keeshan; Nolan, Adysen, and Rylen Landauer; Aiden and Kyler Scheef; and Lake Johnson; step-grandchild: Taya Johnson; two brothers: Jim (Elaine) Scheef of Gretna, NE; Jerry (Marlynn) Scheef of Spalding, NE; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
