Jean A. McCarthy, age 85, of Spalding, NE passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Good Samaritan Center, Albion, Nebraska.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 11, 2026, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Spalding, NE with Rev. Lawrence Vadakkan officiating. Interment will take place at the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, at the church with a 7:00 p.m. wake service.
Memorials are suggested to the Spalding Senior Center, Spalding, NE.
Levander Funeral Home of Albion, NE is in charge of the arrangements.
Jean Anne McCarthy was born Nov. 15, 1940, to Wenzel F. and Rose Marie (Wisnieski) Ortmeier at West Point, NE. She grew up in the West Point area and attended grade school at Monterey, NE. She graduated from St. Joseph High School, Colorado Springs, CO. She received a B.A. degree from the University of Albuquerque, Albuquerque, NM, in 1963, after which she taught school in Omaha, NE.
On Nov. 27, 1965, she married Don McCarthy at St. Joan of Arc Church, Omaha, NE. In March 1967, she and her husband moved to Spalding, NE. She continued teaching for another four years.
She especially enjoyed reading, playing the piano, sewing, and doing artwork.
Survivors are her husband: Don; daughter: Susan (Kenneth) Pfeifer of Juniata, NE; son Edward (Mandy) McCarthy of Spalding, NE; 5 grandchildren: Brittany (Chris) Hollister of Hastings, NE; Leslie (Kaleb) Horton of Elkhorn, NE; Josh (Shelby) Pfeifer of Omaha, NE; Dylan Pfeifer of Juniata, NE; Kaylynn, Brianna, and Elijah McCarthy of Spalding, NE; great-grandchildren: Collins, Londyn, Will, Porter, Davis, Blake, Evelyn, and Halsey; brothers: Randy (Luann) Ortmeier of West Point, NE, Tom (Jane) Ortmeier of Fort Collins, CO, and Dan Ortmeier of Denver, CO; sisters: Betty Kreikemeier and Nancy (David) Boyle, both of Fort Collins, CO, and Mary Ann (Chuck) Hackenmiller of Lincoln, NE; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Jim (Clairetta) Ortmeier; sister: Judy Ortmeier; and brother-in-law David Kreikemeier.
