Hildamay Johnson

Hildamay "Hilda" Johnson, 90, of St. Edward, NE passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Estates in Albion, NE.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the St. Edward Christian Community Church, St. Edward, NE with Pastor Mick Goc officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, St. Edward, NE. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the St. Edward Public Library.

Hildamay "Hilda" Johnson, daughter of Lloyd Theodore and Verna Frances (Glidden) Steinbach was born on December 15, 1933, in St. Edward, NE. She attended St. Edward Public School and graduated with the class of 1952.

On May 20, 1953, Hilda married the love of her life Robert LeRoy Johnson on the family farm in St. Edward, NE. From this union, she was blessed with eight children. The couple lived and raised their family on the farm until 1967, when they moved to town. Hilda worked as a cook at the nursing home and at the senior center.

Hilda was a lifelong member of the St. Edward United Methodist Church. She was part of the Nebraska Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women. She was the president of the American Legion Auxiliary and National Postmaster Auxiliary. Hilda was a Den mother along with her and Bob being the Boy Scout Master. She cooked and volunteered at two Christian camps Calvin Crest, Ranch Camp in Fremont for 20 years and was Camp Grandma at JC Camp.

Hilda enjoyed cooking, reading, sewing, embroidering, and making quilts for her loved ones. She liked attending religious concerts, gardening, canning, tending to her flowers, drawing and horses.  Hilda loved going to her children and grandchildren's activities and sporting events. Most of all she liked spending time with her family and making memories.

Hilda is survived by her six children: Jerry (Cindy) Johnson of Lincoln, NE; Jacqueline (Terry) Hinds of Columbus, NE; Steve Johnson of Genoa, NE; Dave (Beth) Johnson of Hastings, NE; Don (Alice) Johnson of Fort Calhoun, NE; Jeff (Gaylene) Johnson of Columbus, NE; daughters-in-love: Sue Johnson of St. Edward, NE; Melissa Johnson of Lincoln, NE; 22 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; five brothers: Jake Steinbach of St. Edward, NE; Floyd Steinbach of Fullerton, NE; Jim Steinbach of Iowa; Jack Steinbach of Sargent, NE; Dave (Mary Sue) Steinbach of Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Robert Johnson; two sons: Mike and Robert Johnson Jr.; sister: Helen Volkmer; brothers: Clarence and Francis Steinbach, and sisters-in-law.
