Helen Elaine Schroeter was born on November 9, 1928 to Rudolph and Helen (Sokol) Pospisil on the Pospisil Family Farm, northeast of Newman Grove. She attended Madison County District 59 through eighth grade and graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1945. Growing up on the farm during the 1930’s she enjoyed working alongside her parents and sister, Norma.

Helen married her neighborhood sweetheart, Paul Schroeter, on March 20, 1949. Their wedding date was originally scheduled for March 6 but was postponed due to one of the many blizzards of the winter of 1948-1949. Helen and Paul lived on farms near Madison and Enola before settling on the Schroeter home place in 1958. During this time, they welcomed their daughters, Sandra in 1949, Pamela in 1953, and Debra in 1957.

Helen became a Christian after meeting Paul, and they raised their three daughters in the Lutheran faith. She enjoyed attending church and Bible studies during her years on the farm, while in Norfolk, and after returning to Newman Grove.

Helen had the heart of a servant, always thinking of others before herself. She was known for her delicious meals, always cooking in abundance. No one ever left hungry or without a generous supply of leftovers. Looking good was important to her, and she was known for her stylish outfits, bouffant hairdo, and red lipstick.

Helen and Paul enjoyed fishing trips, bus trips, and trips to Hominy, OK to visit the Downing family. After retiring from farming, Helen and Paul moved to Norfolk in 1995. Paul passed away in 2010, and Helen moved to the Newman House Assisted Living in Newman Grove. Helen was honored to receive the Aksarben Pioneer Farm Award in 2010, for 100 years of continuous ownership of the Pospisil Family Farm. She moved to the Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in 2022, where she spent her remaining years. Her legacy of generosity and love for her family will never be forgotten.

Helen is survived by her two daughters: Pam (Keith) King of Newman Grove, NE; Deb (Doug) Linse of Tilden, NE; son-in-law: Max Downing of Bixby, OK; 10 grandchildren: Sara Wells; Zach (Katy) Downing; Aaron Downing; Jennifer (Anthony) Coblentz; Brett (Kally) King; Ashley (Nate) Hughes; Matt (Sara) King; Angie (Donny) Werner; Audrey Stone; Sheena (Joey) Tegeler; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Paul; daughter: Sandra Downing; son-in-law: Delayne Stone; parents: Rudolph and Helen Pospisil; and sister and brother-in-law: Norma and Louis Busteed.
