Gary was born on April 23, 1944, in Albion, Nebraska, to Theodore and Mildred (Bannister) Schafer. He graduated from Albion High School in 1962 before continuing his education at the University of Nebraska–Kearney, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He later received his master's degree from Colorado State University.
On May 29, 1964, Gary married Carol Schafer in Albion, Nebraska. Together they raised a family and shared many meaningful years. Though they later divorced, they remained close and continued to cherish the family they built together. Carol preceded him in death. In his later years, Gary shared a loving partnership with Lynne Kotrous.
Gary dedicated his life to education and service. A passionate teacher and lifelong mentor, he believed deeply in the power of learning and helping others reach their potential. His commitment to education extended beyond the classroom through his leadership roles, including serving as president of the Nebraska Education Association.
Gary also devoted much of his life to Alcoholics Anonymous, where he found purpose in supporting others on their recovery journeys. As a sponsor and mentor, he offered encouragement, wisdom, and hope to countless individuals whose lives were forever changed by his guidance.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, Gary was a man of many talents and passions. He was a gifted artist who found joy and peace in painting. He loved the freedom of the open road and was never happier than when he was riding his motorcycle. Alongside his work in education, Gary spent many years designing and building homes throughout the community, leaving a lasting legacy in the places where families would create memories of their own.
Some of his family's most treasured memories were made during summers at the lake. Whether boating, water skiing, or simply enjoying time together, Gary cherished being surrounded by those he loved. He had a calm and steady presence, a kind heart, and a remarkable ability to turn life's challenges into lessons. His non-judgmental, empathetic, and approachable nature touched countless lives and made him someone people naturally turned to for guidance and support.
Gary had a gift for connecting with people of all ages, especially his grandchildren. He loved being silly, making them laugh, and creating moments of joy and fun. At the same time, he never missed an opportunity to share a lesson, encourage confidence, or inspire them to pursue their dreams without fear of failure. Through his example, he taught those around him to believe in themselves, work hard, and embrace life's opportunities with courage and determination.
Above all else, Gary was a devoted father, grandfather, partner, brother, and friend. His love, guidance, humor, creativity, and unwavering support shaped the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy will live on through the countless people he taught, mentored, encouraged, and loved.
Gary is survived by his son, Joel Schafer of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Michelle Britton of Cameron Park, California; grandchildren, Cali Britton of Sacramento, California, and Gabi Britton of San Luis Obispo, California; Gerrod Britton of Puerto Rico, Geoff Britton (Alexa) of Omaha, Nebraska, and Vivienne Schafer Kuan of Washington, D.C.; sister, Renelle Loshbaugh of Lincoln, Nebraska; loving partner, Lynne Kotrous of Columbus, Nebraska; along with many beloved relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Mildred Schafer; former spouse, Carol Schafer; and sister, Shirley Darling.
