Dolores (Miller) Root-Schaefer, 102, of Hooper, NE, formerly of Albion, NE, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2019, at the Hooper Care Center in Hooper, NE
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 6, 2019 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion, NE with Fr. Mark Tomasiewicz officiating. Interment will be at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Albion, NE. Visitation will be 4:30-6 p.m., Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion, NE. Visitation will resume Friday morning at the church from 9-10 a.m. with a 10 a.m. recital of the rosary.
Dolores Julianna (Miller) Root-Schaefer, daughter of Andrew and Catherine (Kluthe) Miller was born on October 10, 1917 in a four room house on the family farm five miles east of Cedar Rapids, NE. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Dolores attended school at District 9 Plum Center through the 10th grade. She continued her education at Cedar Rapids High School, graduating from their in 1935.
After high school, Dolores tried to find work as a teacher. Due to the hard times of the Great Depression, her father found her a ride on a fuel truck headed for Witchita, KS. While in Witchita, Dolores found work as a housekeeper and nanny. It was here that she met her future husband Leroy Root on a blind date at a local dancing pavillion. The couple was united in marriage on September 7, 1939 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Wichita. Leroy found a job with the U.S. Government and following their wedding the couple lived in Washington D.C., Greenbelt, MD (21 years), Rapid City, SD (3 years), Great Falls, MT (7 years), Australia (4 1/2 years), Tucson, AZ (10 years) and in 1990 moved to Albion, NE. Leroy passed away in 1994.
Following Leroy's death, Dolores moved to Phoenix, AZ. While living there she met John Schaefer and the couple was married in Los Angeles, CA on April 26, 1997. They lived in Los Angeles for eight years, moving back to Albion in 2006. John passed away in 2012.
Dolores was a member of the Catholic faith her entire life. She enjoyed painting, taking care of her family and was an excellent cook. Throughout the years she won several blue ribbons at the Boone County Fair for her bread and rolls.
Dolores is survived by her daughter: Mary Catherine Anselmo of Hooper, NE; six grandchildren: Victor (Debbi) Anselmo; Joseph (Karen) Anselmo; Michele (Tom) Doud; John (Sherry) Anselmo; Rachael (Brian) Voas; Josie Jacobs; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Rita Seaman of Tempe, AZ and Marie Krohn of Albion, NE; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; son: Michael Root; and three siblings: Joe Miller; Rosemary Koerber; and Helen Driskel.
