Clara M. Johnson

Clara M. Johnson, 93, of Newman Grove, NE, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2024, at her home in Newman Grove, NE.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 20, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Newman Grove, NE with Pastor Claire Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Newman Grove, NE.  Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the church.

Clara Martha Johnson, daughter of Gustav and Martha (Leder) Schroeter, was born March 12, 1931, at Madison, NE. She was baptized on March 23, 1931, at St. John's Lutheran Church (Green Garden) Madison, NE. She was later confirmed on March 25, 1945. She first attended St. John's Lutheran School for eight years before going to Madison High School for one year. She then finished her high school career at Newman Grove High School where she graduated in May of 1949. Following graduation, Clara worked at various jobs in Norfolk, NE and Yankton, SD.

On March 1 3, 1951, Clara married Donald DeForrest Johnson (Goody) at John's Lutheran Church in Yankton, SD. They were to be married on her birthday but due to a snowstorm they had to postpone it a day. From this union, Clara was blessed with five children. The couple lived and raised their family on a farm northwest of Newman Grove, NE. There they had a dairy farm, raised chickens, and pigs. Clara also worked at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home as a CNA and CMA for over 20 years.

Clara was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1951. She taught Sunday school at Trinity Lutheran Church while the children were growing up. Clara was a member of Women of the ELCA as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was an active member in church activities such as quilting group, and Bible study. Clara had a quick wit, a great sense of humor, and a beautiful laugh and smile. In her free time Clara enjoyed quilting, embroidery, reading, collecting angels and butterflies, watching and feeding the birds. She enjoyed playing Pinochle, going on bus trips and concerts at the State Fair. She had great pleasure mowing her yard on her John Deere lawn tractor and tending to her flowers. She made many memories with her grandkids.

Clara is survived by her five children: John Johnson of Newman Grove, NE; Peggy (Jeff) Wright of Toledo, WA; Michael (Sheryl) of Leigh, NE; Joni Johnson of Newman Grove, NE; Tommy Johnson of Newman Grove, NE; one brother: Oscar (Kay) Schroeter of Chandler, AZ; sister-in-law: Helen Schroeter; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Goody; four brothers: Otto, Paul, Arnold, and Ray Schroeter; four sisters: Betty Mitchell; Helen Bickley; Irma Sunderman; Ida Jons; and two infant daughters.
