Charles Martin “Charlie” Flood was born on September 20, 1945, in rural Boone County, Nebraska, to Wilson and Margaret (Lee) Flood. Charlie was baptized, confirmed, and remained a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Newman Grove. He attended grade school in Newman Grove and District 38 in Boone County before graduating from Newman Grove High School in 1963. Following graduation, he farmed alongside his father for three years.
In 1967, Charlie proudly served his country in the United States Army. After completing basic training, he was deployed to Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division and was honorably discharged in 1969. During his service, he earned numerous honors including the Combat Infantryman Badge, Sharpshooter (M-60 MG), Marksman (Rifle), Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, Charlie worked in construction in Nebraska and Colorado until 1977, when he returned to Newman Grove to farm with his brother, Raymond.
On March 9, 1991, Charlie was united in marriage to Connie Jo Pospisil at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple farmed northwest of Newman Grove until their retirement in 2011, when they moved into town. In retirement, Charlie and Connie enjoyed time on the road in their motor home touring coast to coast and in the winter, months heading to the tropical islands with Jamaica being his favorite.
Charlie was affectionately known as “Uncle Charlie” and was a favorite among his many nieces and nephews. He cherished time spent with family, especially entertaining them on the farm. He enjoyed farming, having coffee at the bowling alley, and spending time with those he loved.
He was a member of American Legion Post 73 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10035. On June 6, 2016, Charlie had the honor of participating in the Vietnam Combat Veterans Flight to Washington, D.C., where he was welcomed home with a special reception at the Omaha airport.
