Betty "Jean" Miller, daughter of Ivan and Ethel (Yetter) Stephens, was born on October 9, 1925, at her parents' home in rural Nance County and was baptized on July 6, 1941. Jean was the third of six siblings. She attended country schools in the area before graduating from St. Edward High School in 1943. Following graduation, Jean attended Wayne State College to take teacher training classes. She returned to the St. Edward area, teaching at several rural schools.
Jean met Warren Miller, the new guy in town, when she went to the furniture store to purchase a kitchen table and chairs for her parents. Warren and Jean started dating and soon married on August 18, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in St. Edward, NE. They became the parents of one son and three daughters. Jean was a homemaker and worked alongside Warren at their furniture store and funeral home. Jean studied hard to get her funeral director's license and the two of them became a good business team.
Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a member of the Methodist Women's Group. She was a member of the PEO Chapter DV, American Legion Auxiliary, Women's Club, and Social Hour Club. Jean and Warren also enjoyed card club.
Jean loved the Lord and was always willing to pray for others. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and an amazing "Momo" to her grandkids. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was kind and helpful and always showed her appreciation to others with the phrase, "Bless your heart!". Jean was a great cook. She made a mean pot roast and loved baking cookies and bars. There was always a dessert in her freezer and usually enough Golden Nugget bars for everyone to enjoy. Jean always had music in their home and she and Warren loved to dance. Throughout her life she has always had a soft spot for puppies and kittens. One would be remiss not to mention Jean's great sense of humor and wit. She was fun and funny!
Jean is survived by her four children: DeEtte (Don) Freitag of Holdrege, NE; Dean (Pam) Miller of St. Edward, NE; Denise (Devon) Fischer of Omaha, NE; Diane Miller of Grand Island, NE; six grandchildren: Michael (Amy) Freitag; Daniel (Kasey) Freitag; Cortney (Jason) Roberts; Brandon (Kelly) Fischer; Brett (Caitlyn) Fischer; Brian Fischer; 11 great-grandchildren: Aiden, Erin, Jace, Ethan, Josh, Zack, Lillia, Lawson, Leyton, Brinley, and Emersyn; brother: Earl (Kathleen) Stephens of St. Edward, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, and several dear friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband Warren in 1993; an infant brother; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Iola and Arnold Mahoney; Roberta and Paul Cahill; Fern and Leland Smith; and grandson: Patrick Swanson.
