Alfred C. “Alf” Glaser 83, of Kearney, NE, formerly of Spalding, NE, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at St. Michael’s Catholic Parish Center in Spalding, NE with Fr. Don Buhrman, Fr. Jim Murphy and Fr. Joe Hannappel officiating. Interment will follow at the Parish Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #299 of Spalding, NE. Visitation will be 3 - 7 p.m. Monday at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding, NE with a 7 p.m. wake service. Visitation will resume Tuesday from 8:30 – 10 a.m. at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary.

Alfred Cletus Glaser, son of Albert A. and Mary E. (Langer) Glaser was born November 25, 1929 in Spalding, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding and received his elementary and high school education at Spalding Academy, graduating in 1948. He entered the United States Army – During the Korean War and served two years in Army Aviation before receiving an honorable discharge. He attended college at University of Nebraska-Omaha and Emporia State University while flying back and forth to operate a Seed House and Aerial Crop Dusting business he started in Spalding, NE.

On November 29, 1958, Alf was married to Rosella Marie “Rosie” Crosby at St. John’s Catholic Church in Omaha, NE. The couple made their home on a farm near Spalding, NE where Alf continued to operate the seed house and crop dusting business, along with farming. He was also a certified aircraft mechanic and commercial, instrument and multi-engine rated pilot, flying both airplanes and helicopters. He was in aircraft sales and service, along with being a distributer for North American Aircraft. They remained in the Spalding area until moving to Kearney, NE in 2003.

Alf was honored with multiple awards throughout his career: “Airman of the Year” in 1980 from the Nebraska Aviation Trade Association (NATA); Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award in 2007 for 50 years of aircraft mechanics service; and he was inducted into the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame in 2006. He survived six airplane crashes and one helicopter crash during his flying career.

He was a life-long member of St. Michael’s Church in Spalding, NE and more recently St. James Church in Kearney, NE. He was a member of the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, Knights of Columbus, Flying Farmers of America, and the NATA in which he served as president for several years.

Alf was an accomplished player of the accordion and piano and enjoyed singing. He had many “loves” and hobbies in life including his love for the Lord, wife Rosie and their 5 sons. Flying, fishing, hunting, trapping, music, attending auctions, and spending time with family and friends telling stories.

Alf was a colorful man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Rosie of Kearney, NE; five sons: Greg Glaser of Kearney; Jerry (Vickie) Glaser of Seward; Kenny (Stacy) Glaser of Shelton; Larry (Angie) Glaser of Springfield, MO; Allen (Tammie) Glaser of Kearney, NE; 18 grandchildren; two sisters: Sr. Joan Miriam Glaser O.P. of St. Catharine, KY; Mary Helen (James) Cannon of Grand Island, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Mary Glaser; three brothers: Vincent J. and wife Irene; Donald A. and wife Mary; Jerome (Mick) one sister: Elaine Cannon and husband Robert D.; and a nephew Robert A. Cannon.
